Michael Jackson's White Skin

Did the King of Pop Want to be Black or White?

Michael Jackson's death renewed debate about how he, a black man, ended up with bleached white skin.

Michael Jackson suffered from vitiligo which causes loss of patches of pigmentation. Jacko is said to have bleached his skin to even out the colour. Those who hold this view cite Michael Jackson’s admission to Oprah Winfrey back in 1993 that he was a victim of a depigmenting skin condition.

Others state that by bleaching his skin, Michael Jackson was denouncing his blackness. They dismiss Michael’s assertion on the Oprah Winfrey show that he was proud of who he was.

The problem with both positions is that they seem to suggest that it was either out of the question for the King of Pop to aspire to be white, or that such a desire was motivated by shame over his African-Amercian identity respectively.

Still, indirect but compelling evidence suggests that the King of Pop at least aspired to be seen as a white man. There is reason to believe it was an attempt to de-racialise himself. Vitiligo, however debilitating it may have been, seemed to have provided an opportunity and an excuse for MJ to acquire a white skin.

Michael Jackson’s Operations

Despite denials, Michael Jackson’s changing appearance roused speculation that he had undergone nasal surgery to give him a thinner, more pointed nose. Michael Jackson broke his nose in 1979 during a dance session which led to two surgeries that he admitted to. However, he is thought to have gone for more operations. Surgeons suggested that he had acquired thinner lips and had other things done to his forehead as his addiction to surgery grew.

Pepsi Pyrotechnics Ruin Michael Jackson’s Hair

As a child star and teenage soul singer MJ had Afro hair, but the older pop superstar star had flowing wavy hair.

The explanation given for this transformation is that Michael Jackson was an unfortunate victim of fireworks that ruined his hair and hair follicles during a Pepsi video advert shoot. While the incident happened and damaged his hair and its roots, it is hard to believe that the biggest star in the world could not find Afro wigs if he looked for them.

Michael Jackson’s Girlfriends and Wives

Michael Jackson best known dates were white women- Brooke Shields, Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe. The later two briefly became his wives. This alone does not imply a desire to be white or need to disconnect with his black identity. However, added to other actions and behaviours, it’s easy to surmise that Michael Jackson was trying to become white by whatever means possible, including through marriage.

Michael Jackson’s Children

After Michael’s death his children were exposed to the world. Their physical appearance invited speculation about their paternity because they look white. Despite this, some people see their resemblance to Michael Jackson. The question is-which Jackson do they look like? The younger African American or the white skinned middle aged man?

Nevertheless, having white children is not proof that the King of Pop coveted a white identity. The Queen of Pop Madonna adopted black African children right out of Malawi. Does that indicate that she wants a black identity? No. Michael Jackson did more. He altered his facial appearance and acquired flowing curly hair. He dated and married white women. He became the King of Pop, a music genre predominantly, but not exclusively identified with white people.

Michael Jackson’s Genius

MJ was possibly proud of his black identity as he told Oprah Winfrey in 1993 but may have had valid, shrewd and pragmatic business considerations for changing his appearance. Musically gifted and ambitious, MJ became a dual man so that colour would not stand in the way of global pop domination. It was his genius. He did not admit this to Oprah Winfrey and to the world to avoid being misunderstood and alienate both white and black fans. But to be a pop poster boy whatever level of brilliance he possessed, Michael might have felt that race, so important in America, stood in his way.

There is no reason to believe that Michael Jackson was unaware of or immune to race barriers in life or in the music industry. He was born five years before Martin Luther’s famous ‘I Have a Dream' speech.

Natutally MJ desired his music to be judged by its entertainment value and artistry not the colour of his skin. He transcended race musically and went a step further. For those who might have seen his blackness as a problem he gave them a white King of Pop, the perfect crossover artist.

Michael Jackson was comfortable with the pursuit of whiteness without rejecting his black identity.

We have to give the man his due: Michael Jackson was - beyond a shadow of a doubt - a great artist whose recorded legacy will endure for decades, maybe even a century or more. But an examination of his life is riddled with questions of all that might have been; all that should have been. It is more than likely that this was a severely mentally ill human being who never sought the treatment he so desperately needed; surrounded by fawning sycophants who enabled his sickness by constantly reassuring him that he could do no wrong. As John Lennon once said in the same context about Elvis Presley, another victim of the excesses of fame: "It's always the courtiers that kill the king".
The sad, inescapable truth is that for reasons we will probably never be able to fully understand, his talent and his career were ultimately wasted. Like Charlie Parker, Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland and Lenny Bruce before him, his brilliance as an artist would be overshadowed by severe, psychological torment and an unexplainable desire for self-destruction. Therein lies the real, unspeakable tragedy of Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson was NOT perfect. Are You???
Dig deep and look in the mirror. You might just find that you're not so
"healthy" yourself.
Michael is gone. Let his music and dance be celebrated forever. Forget the rest. Leave us all in peace.

Reading alot of articles and blogs and comments. I must say this is the best Ive come across. I am AA and also a MJ fan. I refuse to be delussional about his transformation. I remember MJ explained in his book moonwalker that he was depressed when the "off the wall" album only won one grammy, and only in the R&B catagory. The doobie brothers (considered Blue eyed soul) received a grammy for album of the year. It was then MJ began to realize that it wasn't his musical talent that was limited but it was his color. He was determined to not be ignored in his next project which was "Thriller" and we all know what happened with that. Thereafter, MJ began to transform physically looking whiter then came the nose becoming thinner, then clef in chin and so on. But I also notice his inner and social circle that he carefully displayed. prior to "thriller" MJ was nutured, mentored and considered family to those great AA entertainers Diana Ross, Stevie wonder, Quincy Jones and many more. They helped him in many compacities in him becoming the MJ he was going to be. After Thriller he replaced them with Liz Taylor, Liza Minneli, mcCulley(child star) Brooke Sheilds and later married Lisa Marie Pressley. I used to scratch my head and wonder why does he always attach himself to those of higher fame? He dated all those hollywood it girls but never really had a true romantic relationship with them. It was a show something to display his colorless view and not to alienated his white audience. what started as wanting to be accepted as the same as other pop artists in the industry lead to an obsession and MJ truely lost his way. I knew he was lost when he was being interviewed in 1994 by Dianne Swayer he was on the side of is then wife LMP. Sawyer turned to LMP and asked is there any physical attraction between you two? What do you see in him. Michael didn't have any clue other than plain question. However, I knew Sawyer was basically asking with disappointment as to how could you(LMP) marry this N****r you are the kings daughter. I personally was offended for him and many other AA who felt the slight. I say all of this just to say MJ has a less fulfilling life not just because he lost his childhood, skin disease, burned scalp, and abusive father. It was mainly because he lived his adult life and career trying desperately to not be a color. Was MJ proud to be black? Yes but embracing it publicly and consitantly putting it on front street would have made him a AA icon not a icon
